Beirut: Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun said Thursday that the new government is setting its sights on contributing to building the state after gaining the confidence of the parliament, expressing his hope that it will not be subject to obstacles.
According to Qatar News Agency, Aoun stated that the government gained the confidence of the parliament yesterday, and he hopes that no one will put a spoke in the wheel of implementing its ministerial statement. He emphasized that the ministers are focused on the task of contributing to building the state.
The Lebanese president highlighted that the international community is waiting for the Lebanese state to demonstrate its ability to establish transparency and justice, which will preserve everyone’s dignity and restore confidence between citizens and their state, as well as between Lebanon and the outside world.
President Aoun appreciated the confidence of those MPs who supported the Lebanese government, and acknowledged those who did not, noting that opposition in Lebanon’s democratic parliamentary system is a right, a duty, a necessity, and a responsibility.
The Lebanese government, led by Nawaf Salam, secured the confidence of the Lebanese Parliament last Wednesday, after a two-day discussion of the ministerial statement. The government received 95 votes out of the 128-member Parliament, with 12 members voting against granting confidence and 4 members abstaining, while the Strong Lebanon bloc withheld confidence from the government.
A new government, consisting of 24 ministers, headed by Nawaf Salam, was formed in Lebanon on February 8, following weeks of intensive consultations and the election of General Joseph Aoun as the new President of the Republic.
