Beirut: Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun met with UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen and UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert to discuss the situation at the Lebanese-Syrian border and the condition of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
According to Qatar News Agency, President Aoun assured that the border between Lebanon and Syria remains calm and that recent incidents have been addressed. He also briefed the UN officials on the measures taken by the Lebanese army to deploy south of the Litani River in accordance with Resolution 1701.
President Aoun highlighted the challenges posed by Israel's failure to withdraw from five key hills, ongoing hostilities against Lebanon, and the non-return of Lebanese prisoners. These issues, he stated, are obstacles to the army's full deployment to the southern border.
He further mentioned his ongoing efforts with Arab and international parties to pressure Israel into implementing the terms of the cessation of hostilities agreement. This implementation would enable the Lebanese army to carry out its mission of deploying along the entire southern border.
