Katara Launches ‘Bisht House’ to Celebrate Traditional Craftsmanship

Doha: Qatar's Katara Cultural Village has recently inaugurated 'Bisht House', a new heritage space dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the traditional craft of bisht-making. The opening ceremony was attended by Katara's general manager, Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, along with various officials and heritage enthusiasts.

According to Qatar News Agency, the venue offers visitors insights into the stages of producing the bisht, from selecting fabrics to the intricate embroidery using gold and silver zari threads. The bisht, a traditional men's cloak worn over a thobe in the Arab world, symbolizes high status, royalty, and prestige.

Bisht House aims to highlight one of the region's refined traditional crafts, known for its precision and artistic detail, while reinforcing its cultural and historical significance. Founder Sami Al Hawaj emphasized that the bisht is not merely a garment but a work of art reflecting Gulf identity, elegance, and heritage.

He further noted that the center also showcases historic bishts dating back over 50 years, alongside traditional Qatari garments.
