Japan’s Foreign Minister Highlights Strong Qatar-Japan Relations and Strategic Partnership

Doha: HE Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Toshimitsu Motegi emphasized the robust cooperative relationship between Japan and Qatar, describing it as exceptionally strong and multifaceted. The Minister highlighted the importance of further strengthening collaboration as strategic partners, especially in light of his upcoming visit to Doha.

According to Qatar News Agency,HE Motegi noted that diplomatic relations between Japan and Qatar were established in 1972, and over the past fifty years, these relations have expanded significantly across various sectors, including politics, economy, culture, and sports. This upcoming visit marks his second to Qatar, following his first in 2021, and presents an opportunity to deepen cooperation and discuss crucial economic and political issues, including regional peace efforts.

The Japanese Foreign Minister reiterated the deep-rooted friendship between Tokyo and Doha, noting that this relationship has been instrumental in significant areas such as the development of the LNG industry, which has fueled Qatar's economic growth. He recalled Qatar's support during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, highlighting the additional LNG supply and financial aid provided by Qatar.

In the economic domain, Motegi explained that Japan and Qatar have mutually benefited each other's development, particularly in energy and infrastructure. He mentioned Japan's involvement in projects like the Doha Metro and Hamad International Airport and expressed a desire for further economic cooperation beyond the energy sector, focusing on long-term investments and industrial development as outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030.

Cultural exchanges also play a vital role in Qatar-Japan relations, with active engagements in regional, sports, and academic exchanges. The Japanese Foreign Minister congratulated Qatar on its FIFA World Cup qualification and expressed hope for continued collaboration in various fields.

Motegi further discussed Japan's intentions to engage in strategic dialogues with Qatar to enhance economic cooperation, including foreign direct investment. He noted that Japan views Qatar as a key partner in expanding geographical cooperation, particularly in third countries like Africa.

The Minister acknowledged Qatar's diplomatic efforts in mediating peace negotiations and highlighted Japan's solidarity with Qatar amid regional tensions. Regarding the situation in Gaza, he outlined Japan's commitment to contributing to peace and stability in the Middle East through humanitarian assistance and support for Palestinian development efforts.
