Israeli Forces Demolish Structures at UNRWA Headquarters in Sheikh Jarrah

Jerusalem: Israeli occupation forces conducted demolition activities at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, north of occupied Jerusalem, supervised by Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Jerusalem governorate released a statement condemning the actions as a serious escalation, executed under the pretense of lacking a permit. The UN flag was lowered and replaced with the Israeli flag at the site.

The governorate labeled the incident as a blatant violation of the sanctity of international institutions, emphasizing that the UNRWA compound in Jerusalem is protected under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the UN.

The statement further explained that the demolition is part of a systematic and continuous escalation against UNRWA, with notifications from electricity and water companies about suspending services to several UNRWA facilities in occupied East Jerusalem. Additionally, an UNRWA-affiliated health center was stormed and temporarily ordered to close, despite its role as a primary healthcare provider for refugees.

The Jerusalem governorate stressed that these actions directly target a UN humanitarian agency, which serves approximately 192,000 Palestinian refugees in the governorate. The measures were described as hindrances to the implementation of UNRWA's mandate from the UN General Assembly.

The governorate held the Israeli occupation responsible for the consequences of these actions, viewing them as part of ongoing efforts to undermine the refugee issue and their right of return, as recognized by international legitimacy resolutions.
