Iran’s FM Engages European Counterparts on Nuclear Sanctions Mechanism

Iran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone call Friday with the foreign ministers of France, Britain, and Germany, as well as the High Representative of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, to discuss developments in Iran's nuclear program and the snapback sanctions mechanism.

According to Qatar News Agency, during the call, Araghchi reiterated Iran's firm rejection of European efforts to activate the mechanism, questioning their legal and moral authority to do so and warning of its consequences. He emphasized that Iran remains committed to diplomacy and acts decisively to defend its national interests, expressing readiness for any diplomatic solution that safeguards the rights of the Iranian people.

In response to European proposals to extend UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to allow more time for negotiations, Araghchi clarified that the resolution falls under the jurisdiction of the Security Council and that Iran will consult with its allies in the council regarding any future steps. The three European countries and the EU reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing diplomatic solutions to the crisis.

At the conclusion of the call, both sides agreed to hold a new round of talks next Tuesday at the level of deputy foreign ministers.
