The photo and video-sharing platform Instagram announced that it is reducing the quality of videos that do not receive a large number of views, in a move aimed at managing resources more efficiently.
In general, the goal is to show the highest-quality video, but if something is not watched for a long time because the majority of views are in the beginning the quality of the video will be reduced, and if it is watched again gains significant views again, it will be re-rendered it to a higher quality video, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said.
He added that this step comes to ensure that high-quality content is displayed to Instagram users, especially videos that attract a lot of interaction.
He explained that Instagram gives more resources to videos from the most popular content creators, which means that clips with high views have better display quality.
This policy is in line with the approach of Meta, the parent company of Instagram, which had said in 2021 that it might not be able to process the increasin
g number of videos uploaded to the platform with the same quality.
