Doha: Indonesian authorities announced Tuesday the rescue of several passengers from a boat that had capsized off the western coast of the country. The vessel, carrying 18 people, overturned near the Mentawai Islands off the western shore of Sumatra on Monday.
According to Qatar News Agency, a statement from the Mentawai Search and Rescue Agency confirmed that 11 missing passengers were successfully rescued. Some survivors were found wearing life jackets, while others clung to wreckage to stay afloat after the boat encountered rough waves.
Indonesia, an archipelago of around 17,000 islands, frequently experiences maritime accidents, many of which are attributed to lapses in safety standards.
