With the participation of Syria and in the presence of a large number of heads of states and government and delegations of UN member states, High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development was held Monday at the UN headquarters in New York.

During the opening ceremony, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, said that climate change has destroyed entire societies, adding that the 2030 Agenda fulfills the world countries’ aspirations.

He underlined the necessity to respect the obligations stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, saying that achieving only 15% of development goals is not enough at the global level and there is an urgent need for reform.

Guterres called for having six measures that must be taken to achieve 2030 Agenda, which are confronting hunger, enhancing the renewable energy role, bridging the digital divide, improving the education level and finally ensuring decent work and life and protecting nature.

On the sidelines of the forum, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, met with Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Dennis Moncada, at the UN headquarters.

The two sides discussed means to boost bilateral relations in various fields, in addition to issues of common interest, cooperation and coordination on topics listed on the UN agenda.

They stressed the importance of uncovering the negative effects of unilateral coercive measures imposed by Western countries, especially US, on a number of member states, including Syria and Nicaragua.
