Doha: Google announced the launch of a new feature that allows users to sign in to their accounts. The feature works by having users record a short selfie video, which is then compared with a reference video they previously saved with Google to verify their identity before allowing them to sign in or recover access to their account.

According to Qatar News Agency, the reference video is encrypted and securely stored in Google's cloud infrastructure, allowing it to be used from any device when needed. Users have the option to delete the video at any time through their account settings, and by default, it is used solely for identity verification unless they explicitly opt in to additional uses.

Google stated that it employs multiple layers of protection to detect impersonation attempts using photographs or deepfake videos. This includes liveness checks that require users to perform simple movements to prove it's a live video, alongside its existing security systems that monitor for suspicious sign-in attempts. Google added that the feature will be rolled out gradually to users worldwide.
