Germany Urges China and Russia to Back UN Resolution on Strait of Hormuz

New york: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on China and Russia to pave the way for a United Nations resolution aimed at coordinating international efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, saying their joint use of the veto has so far blocked such action.

According to Qatar News Agency, Wadephul, speaking on the sidelines of his visit to the United Nations in New York, emphasized the importance of upholding the rules-based international order not just in words, but in practice. He highlighted that discussions in New York, including debates at the United Nations Security Council on freedom of navigation, revealed a broad international consensus on the necessity of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.

Wadephul further pointed out that a critical element in the ongoing US-Iran talks aimed at resolving the Middle East crisis should be Iran's acknowledgment of the need to cease its pursuit of nuclear weapons. He stated, "The world does not need new nuclear powers - it needs fewer nuclear weapons."

The German government views a UN resolution as essential for deploying its armed forces, the Bundeswehr, in any potential security mission in the strait. The Strait of Hormuz is crucial to the global economy, particularly for oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, and the blockade has contributed to rising global market prices for crude oil and LNG.
