Doha: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have underscored the critical importance of access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation services, describing them as essential pillars of human rights. The statement was presented by Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Naser Al Hayen, speaking on behalf of the GCC Ambassadors during the interactive dialogue on the UN Special Rapporteur on water and sanitation at the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council. This position highlights the growing challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation.
According to Qatar News Agency, Ambassador Al Hayen stressed the GCC’s commitment to innovation and investment in sustainable solutions, including renewable energy, improved water-use efficiency, and advancements in desalination and recycling technologies. He emphasized that international cooperation and knowledge-sharing are key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to water. He also called for international policies to be tailored to the specific environmental and climatic conditions of each country, ensuring equitable access to clean water without discrimination.
