Doha: In a recent editorial titled "Gaza's Starvation: A Global Moral Collapse," The Peninsula, an English-language daily in Qatar, addressed the severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The publication highlighted the worsening conditions as deaths due to hunger and malnutrition rise, particularly impacting children and infants.
According to Qatar News Agency, The Peninsula emphasized the dire situation faced by over two million people in Gaza, who are being systematically starved due to Israel's stringent restrictions on aid entry. When aid does manage to reach Gaza, it does so at a perilous cost. Desperate crowds seeking food often encounter lethal force or tear gas, transforming the quest for sustenance into a life-threatening endeavor.
The editorial further noted that hospitals in Gaza are not only tending to the wounded but are also inundated with cases of severe malnutrition and starvation. The Peninsula described these events as evidence of a system that has been deliberately dismantled. The newspaper criticized Israel's "military aid" strategy, dismissing it as a facade of humanitarian relief while essential supplies like baby formula and fuel are withheld from Gaza's residents.
The Peninsula concluded by asserting that the crisis is not merely a humanitarian disaster but a profound moral failure. The international community cannot claim ignorance, as the grim reality is evident for all to see.
Similarly, Al-Watan, another Qatari daily, in its editorial "Killing by Starvation," expressed disbelief at the world's inaction in the face of such tragedy. The newspaper cited reports from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and over 100 international humanitarian organizations that have witnessed employees fainting from hunger. Al-Watan questioned the global silence and inaction in response to the deaths of children from starvation and the stalled aid convoys waiting to enter Gaza.
Meanwhile, Al-Raya daily, in its editorial "Qatar Supports Peaceful Resolution of Disputes," highlighted Qatar's significant role as a diplomatic leader in regional and international conflict resolution. The newspaper underscored Qatar's commitment to United Nations principles and its dedication to resolving conflicts through mediation and diplomacy.
Al-Raya detailed Qatar's efforts to promote sustainable peace through development projects, emphasizing the interconnectedness of peace, security, development, and human rights. The editorial also noted Qatar's active involvement with international partners to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and achieve an immediate ceasefire amid the ongoing famine, infrastructure collapse, and health system breakdown.
The newspaper concluded by reiterating Qatar's firm opposition to using food as a weapon of war and called on the international community to pressure Israel to allow the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
