Paris: A Gazan student who was studying in France on a scholarship has departed for Qatar following the discovery of anti-Semitic posts on her social media accounts, as confirmed by the foreign ministry on Sunday. This incident has incited political backlash and prompted the French government to halt its scholarship program for students evacuated from Gaza.
According to France24.com, foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized the "unacceptable nature" of the comments made by Ms. Nour Attaalah, a student from Gaza, before her arrival in France. The ministry's statement highlighted that due to the gravity of her remarks, Ms. Attaalah was required to leave France and has since relocated to Qatar to continue her studies.
The controversy began when social media posts from the past two years, reportedly calling for violence against Jews, were discovered and subsequently deleted. This revelation led to a judicial investigation into the incitement of terrorism and an inquiry to determine why these posts had not been detected earlier.
While FRANCE 24 could not verify the screenshots attributed to Attaalah, Sciences Po Lille confirmed the authenticity of her social media comments without providing further details. In response, Attaalah's lawyer, Dahmane, argued that the allegations were based on tweets taken out of context.
In light of these events, Minister Barrot announced on Friday that France would suspend all student evacuation programs from Gaza while the investigation into the oversight continues. The foreign ministry has refrained from disclosing the number of students impacted by this decision, citing privacy concerns.
Since the outbreak of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, France has welcomed several hundred students from Gaza.
