Four movies that have benefited from the support of “Atlas Workshops” are included in the Cannes selections, announced Tuesday the Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation.
The foundation welcomed, in a statement, “the strong presence of Moroccan cinema in Cannes this year,” stressing that it is “a historic presence, since it is the first time that Morocco participates with three films”.
Two Moroccan movies in the “Un Certain Regard” section, a Jordanian film in “Critics’ Week”, a Moroccan film in the ” Directors’ Fortnight”: through these selections, the Atlas Workshops, the Marrakech International Film Festival’s talent development industry program, created in 2018, confirms its role as an incubator and a key professional platform in the region, said the statement.
Presented twice at the Atlas Workshops, “the mother of all lies” by Asmae El Moudir had won the development award in 2019 and the post-production award in 2021.
“The packs” by Kamal Lazraq had, meanwhile, obtained the Artekino International award at the 2019 edition, recalled the same source, adding that the 2 films will be presented in the section “Un Certain Regard” in Cannes, next May.
Selected for Critics’ Week, “Inshallah a boy” by Amjad Al Rasheed, winner of the 2022 workshop post-production award, is the first Jordanian film to take part in the Cannes Film Festival, all sections included.
“Deserts” by Faouzi Bensaïdi, presented in the Atlas Film Showcase section last November in Marrakech, will be screened at the Directors’ Fortnight.
