Famine Risk Escalates in Sudan Amid Conflict and Drought

Nyala:Sudan Famine risks are on the rise in conflict-affected areas of Sudan, exacerbated by severe funding shortages, insecurity, and restricted humanitarian access.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has highlighted worsening acute food insecurity and malnutrition, particularly in the regions of Darfur and Kordofan. These areas are suffering from severe drought linked to El Nino and ongoing fighting, which are depleting food supplies.

Malnutrition screenings indicate a sharp deterioration among displaced people, with cases of severe acute malnutrition among children doubling in Nyala and quadrupling in Kass. North Darfur is particularly affected, facing severe food insecurity due to delayed rainfall damaging agriculture and forcing displaced farmers to depend on food markets.

Over 300,000 people have been displaced across Greater Kordofan since October last year. Fighting in North Kordofan has driven farming communities towards El Obeid, while insecurity and limited access continue to obstruct the resumption of livelihoods.

The IPC emphasized the urgent need for safe, unhindered humanitarian access to conflict zones in Kordofan and additional funding to prevent further loss of life.
