Extraordinary Arab Summit in Cairo to Address Gaza Reconstruction and Regional Issues

Cairo: A number of academics and political analysts have expressed their expectation that the Extraordinary Arab Summit, scheduled to be held on March 4, 2025, in the Egyptian capital, will result in an Arab statement stressing the need for international action aimed at supporting the Palestinian cause, pressuring Israel, denouncing the violations against the Palestinian people, and presenting an Arab proposal opposing the plan to displace the people of the Gaza Strip.

According to Qatar News Agency, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Qatar University Dr. Nafja Sabbah Al-Buafra emphasized the importance of the upcoming summit in adopting a position on fundamental issues, including the necessity of stopping the war on Gaza, continuing the truce, rejecting the displacement project for the people of the Gaza Strip, approving the Gaza reconstruction plan, and rejecting the Israeli aggression and violations of Syrian lands.

Al-Buafra highlighted the most prominent files expected to be discussed on the agenda of this summit, such as the rebuilding of Gaza, which has suffered brutal destruction resulting in more than 48,000 martyrs and the injury of more than 110,000 people. She noted the Arab consensus on rejecting the idea of displacing the Palestinian people from their land, as well as regional and international reactions that denounce this idea.

Al-Buafra also mentioned that the issue of the two-state solution will be present on the agenda, recalling the Arab Peace Initiative from the 2002 Arab League Summit (Beirut Summit), which emphasized the importance of implementing the two-state solution. She expects the summit to issue a statement calling for international action to support the Palestinian cause, pressure Israel, and condemn violations against the Palestinian people.

The reconstruction of Gaza is crucial, as reports suggest that the cost may exceed $30 billion, possibly reaching $40 billion. Al-Buafra expects a unified Arab statement reaffirming support for Palestinian rights and rejecting any attempt to displace Palestinians, especially residents of the Gaza Strip.

Assistant Professor of Media at Qatar University and Editor-in-Chief of The Peninsula newspaper Dr. Khalid Al Shafi highlighted the summit's focus on the latest developments related to the Palestinian cause and emerging international and regional positions. He noted the necessity for a unified Arab position in response to plans aiming to displace residents of Gaza and the West Bank.

Al Shafi pointed out the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts to support Qatari and Egyptian initiatives, as well as the need for Arab solidarity with Jordan and Egypt due to pressures they face regarding displaced Palestinians. He emphasized the Arab Initiative to resolve the Palestinian cause, based on the two-state solution and establishing a Palestinian state in the 1967 territories with Jerusalem as its capital.

The summit is expected to adopt a unified Arab position on the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank, present a vision for rebuilding Gaza, and emphasize the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state.
