Doha: International experts have emphasized the critical role of oversight and accountability mechanisms in preventing corruption and ensuring transparency, underlining their importance in responsible public resource management and early detection of corruption risks.
According to Qatar News Agency, the remarks came during a session within the 11th Conference of the States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption, hosted in Doha from December 15 to 19.
Experts noted that effective anti-corruption efforts rely not only on strong oversight bodies but also on access to information and active public participation, including civil society and the private sector. Munira Ali, Acting Secretary-General of the East African Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities, stressed the key role of supreme audit institutions, particularly in the energy sector, in promoting transparency, accountability, and public service delivery.
Speakers highlighted international examples of institutional collaboration, including Brazil's Itaipu National Hydropower Plant and Petrobras, where integrated oversight, governance, and compliance frameworks have fostered transparency, accountability, and sustainable development outcomes.
The conference underscored that effective cooperation between anti-corruption agencies and audit institutions requires institutional alignment, leadership commitment, and recognition of mutual benefits, helping close gaps in public financial management and prevent corruption before it occurs.
