EU to Take Countermeasures Against US Tariffs

Brussels: The European Commission intends to introduce countermeasures on US goods worth EUR 93 billion (approximately USD 109 billion) to EU member states for approval, while EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic will hold talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Commission explained in a statement that its primary focus is on achieving a result in negotiations with Washington to avoid the imposition of 30 percent US tariffs, after President Donald Trump said he would impose them on the 27-member bloc on August 1.

The Commission stated that Sefcovic will speak to Lutnick later before Commission officials brief EU ambassadors on the current situation. It noted that it will proceed with potential countermeasures in parallel with the negotiations.

It also noted that it will combine its two sets of potential tariffs, EUR 21 billion and EUR 72 billion, into a single list, adding that it will submit it to EU member states for approval.

The European Commission noted that none of the countermeasures will come into effect until August 7.
