Brussels: The European Union reaffirmed Tuesday its sovereign authority to regulate the activities of major technology companies operating within its shared market, following the adoption of a robust legal framework aimed at overseeing digital competition and content management. The new measures include the Digital Markets Act, which targets fair competition, and the Digital Services Act, which governs content moderation and platform responsibilities.
According to Qatar News Agency, European Commission chief spokesperson Paula Pinho emphasized the EU's stance by stating, "It is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory." This declaration was made amidst recent tensions with the United States.
The statement comes a day after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs on countries that enact laws he claims are designed to "harm" American technology firms. His remarks followed the recent release of a hard-fought transatlantic trade deal.
