Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday that she engaged in discussions with US President Donald Trump about implementing further measures to intensify economic pressure on Russia.
According to Qatar News Agency, President von der Leyen communicated via a post on X that she had a constructive call with President Trump focused on strengthening joint efforts to escalate economic sanctions on Russia. She highlighted the urgency of the situation by stating, “Russia’s war economy, sustained by revenues from fossil fuels, is financing the bloodshed in Ukraine.”
In her message, von der Leyen emphasized the need for decisive action, revealing that the European Commission is poised to propose an expedited phase-out of Russian fossil imports. This move is aimed at cutting off a critical financial lifeline that supports Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
