Essaouira – Wednesday night saw the opening of the 7th Jazz sous l’Arganier (Jazz under the Argan Tree) Festival at the iconic Dar Souiri venue, organized by the Essaouira-Mogador association. The evening featured enchanting concerts that brought the city to life with African and jazzy rhythms.

The inaugural night of this annual must-attend event, attended by prominent personalities from various backgrounds, showcased the Trio Driss El Maloumi. The magic of the oud and the virtuosity of the percussionists took the audience on a memorable musical journey.

Attendees also had the opportunity to experience the harmonious fusion of these three exceptional artists, a unique experience marking the end of the year on a high note. Subsequently, the stage was handed over to the Diappa-zone troupe, leading festival-goers on a musical journey inspired by deeply rooted Moroccan and Gnawa music traditions.

Rather than confining themselves to these traditions, the group boldly fused them with other energies, creating a
rich and dynamic musical experience.

This audacious fusion transcending cultural boundaries offered a true meeting between Morocco’s musical heritage and contemporary influences from around the world. The result was a lively symphony, a vibrant tribute to the diversity and depth of Moroccan music.

Essaouira-Mogador Association Secretary-General Kaoutar Chakir Benamara expressed, to MAP, her satisfaction with the resounding success of the inaugural night, noting that the venue was packed, vibrating to the enchanting rhythm of jazz music.

“The gamble seems to have paid off,” she continued, emphasizing that “the 2023 version of the festival boasts very good attendance, surpassing our expectations, reflecting the enthusiasm and commitment of our audience to this unique cultural event.”
