Eris Sub-variant: Ministry of Health Monitors Epidemiological Situation, Calls for Vaccination to be Completed

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection said on Friday that it continues to monitor the epidemiological situation following the appearance in a number of countries around the world of the E.G.5.1 (Eris) sub-variant of the Omicron variant of SARS-COV-2, emphasizing the need to take all doses of the vaccine to boost immunity against the COVID-19 virus.

Despite the stable epidemiological situation in Morocco, which has not recorded any cases of illness linked to this sub-variant, the Ministry of Health said in a statement that it had taken the initiative of consulting the Scientific Committee to assess the risks at national level and formulate the necessary recommendations as part of the ongoing epidemiological vigilance and alert of the National Center for Emergency Operations in Public Health.

The assessment of the situation, added the same source, showed that the spread of the E.G.5.1 sub-variant and a new wave in the country is probable, with the possibility of some critical cases and even deaths, particularly among the elderly, immunocompromised or those with chronic illnesses.

In this regard, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the National Scientific Committee are once again calling for the need to take all doses of vaccine to boost immunity against COVID-19, and are urging people with respiratory symptoms to wear masks and stop all work and social activities, while heading to health facilities for diagnosis and appropriate treatment, and avoiding contact.

In recent weeks, several countries around the world have experienced the appearance of the E.G.5.1 (Eris) sub-variant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, even though its degree of severity has not yet been determined by the World Health Organization, which last May announced the end of the worldwide health emergency linked to Covid 19, while continuing to consider it a threat to public health, given the possibility of the appearance of new variants and sub-variants.
