Earthquake Hits Chile

An earthquake measuring 4.5 magnitude on the Richter scale struck off Valparaiso city in Chile on Tuesday.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the tremor was 47 km from the city at a depth of 22 km.

There have been no reports of casualties or material damage.

Chile is exposed to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

In 2010, a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami hit central and southern Chile, killing 500 people.
