New york: France, the United Kingdom, and Germany have announced their preparedness to reimpose sanctions on Iran if no agreement is reached regarding Tehran's nuclear program by the end of August. The announcement was made on Wednesday through a joint letter addressed to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council. The letter was signed by the foreign ministers of the E3 countries: Germany's Johann Wadephul, France's Jean-Noel Barrot, and the UK's David Lammy.
According to Qatar News Agency, the ministers emphasized in their letter the E3's readiness to activate the snapback mechanism if Iran fails to reach a diplomatic solution by the stipulated deadline or does not take advantage of a potential extension. They reiterated their dedication to seeking a diplomatic resolution and their commitment to ongoing discussions aimed at achieving a negotiated settlement.
This statement follows two months after a significant conflict, which saw a 12-day-long war between Israel and Iran, involving US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. These events have contributed to a halt in negotiations not only between Tehran and Washington but also in talks involving the European trio.
