Doha Historical Dictionary of Arabic Language Launches Smartphone App

Doha:The Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language has launched its official smartphone application on Apple's App Store and Google Play. This initiative aims to broaden access to its extensive linguistic resources for researchers, writers, and other users across the Arab world and beyond.

According to Qatar News Agency, the newly redesigned application reflects the latest updates to the dictionary's online portal, enhancing accessibility for smartphone users across different operating systems. The app allows users to search approximately 300,000 dictionary entries, 10,000 roots, and 10,000 bibliographical sources, and explore a corpus containing nearly one billion words. The app also includes an automated pronunciation service introduced in June.

In addition, users can create personal accounts to unlock specialized services, such as saving searches, submitting comments on entries, and proposing new words or citations. The app also features a "Word of the Day" and links to the dictionary's social media accounts. Dr. Mohammed Al Obaidi, Executive Director of the dictionary, emphasized that the app builds on a vision to make the dictionary accessible to Arabic speakers through modern means.

The dictionary's team is preparing for a new phase that will capitalize on the linguistic wealth of this comprehensive resource. The project took over 12 years to complete, involving more than 500 researchers, and has extended its influence globally, with Western universities like Cornell University and the University of British Columbia incorporating it into their digital libraries.
