La Reunion: At least four people died after cyclone Garance made a devastating crossing of the French overseas territory of La Reunion, bringing wind speeds of up to 155 kph, authorities said on Saturday. The deadly storm hit the island early Friday, triggering flash floods, mudslides, and electrical storms, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without access to water or electricity.
According to Qatar News Agency, the local prefecture provided a new update on X, stating that Garance has been downgraded to a strong tropical storm and the red alert has been lifted. The prefecture reported that 953 people were being sheltered in centers, 160,000 households were without electricity, and 310,000 without water.
The cyclone made landfall in the north of the Indian Ocean island, which lies off Madagascar, on Friday. It caused significant damage by blowing away roofs and cutting power and access to drinking water for many residents. Several hours later, it exited the southwest of the island, as reported by the Meteo France weather agency.
