Bulgaria’s President to Submit Request for National Referendum on Joining Euro Zone

Sofia: Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev announced that he will submit a request to Parliament for a national referendum on adopting the euro as the official currency in the country, describing the move as a test of democracy.

According to Qatar News Agency, Radev emphasized in a televised speech that as a member of the European Union, Bulgaria is facing a strategic decision regarding joining the Eurozone. He highlighted that the referendum will be a test of the National Assembly's democracy and will show who is adhering to the principles of democracy and who is denying Bulgarians the right to determine their future.

The path to the Eurozone remains complex for Bulgaria. In 2024, the European Central Bank announced that the country is not yet eligible to join due to high inflation rates.

In February, Sofia witnessed demonstrations organized by opponents of joining the Eurozone, which led to clashes with the police.

Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007 and has experienced political instability in recent years. The new government, formed last month, declared that joining the Eurozone is a top priority in its governmental program.
