British PM Opposes US Tariff Plans on European NATO Allies Over Greenland

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed opposition to US threats to impose tariffs on NATO allies in connection with efforts to secure Greenland, telling US President Donald Trump that such a move would be wrong.

According to Qatar News Agency, the comments were made during a series of diplomatic calls with European leaders and President Trump, as stated by the British government. Starmer emphasized that "security in the High North is a priority for all NATO allies in order to protect Euro-Atlantic interests."

The British Prime Minister also held discussions with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. These discussions underscore the collaborative approach taken by European leaders in response to the US tariff threats.

Trump announced on Saturday that the United States would impose escalating tariffs on eight European countries until a deal is reached for Washington to purchase Greenland from Denmark. The proposed tariffs would begin at 10% on February 1 and rise to 25% from June 1, affecting Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. The tariffs would remain in place until a deal is reached, indicating the seriousness of the US stance on this matter.
