Arab League to Convene Urgent Meeting to Reject Israel’s Recognition of So-Called ‘Somaliland’

Cairo: The General Secretariat of the Arab League announced Saturday the convening of an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives on Sunday. Based on the request of the State of Somalia and the endorsement of the Arab member states, the meeting is intended to deliberate on the developments related to Israel’s declaration recognizing the so-called “Somaliland”, the General Secretariat of the Arab League said in a statement.

According to Qatar News Agency, the statement stressed that the meeting aims to emphasize the Arab flat-out rejection of any unilateral measures or decisions that would compromise the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and to stress the commitment to the principles of international law, as well as the relevant decisions of the Arab League and the African Union (AU).

Overall, the meeting is set to discuss avenues for reinforcing the joint Arab position in confronting this move and underlining the full solidarity with Somalia and supporting its legitimate institutions, to help safeguard security and stability in the region.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to the Arab Republic of Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awari, has so far announced that his country called for convening this emergency meeting to discuss the consequences of the Israeli occupation’s recognition of what is so-called “The Independent Republic of Somaliland”.

This convention aims to condemn this irresponsible decision and unequivocally reject it, in addition to standing in solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia, defending national sovereignty principles, the unity and territorial integrity of the Arab nations, and pushing back against any attempts to destabilize security in the Horn of Africa region.
