Jerusalem: The Arab League on Wednesday strongly condemned the storming of the Al Aqsa Mosque compound by the Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, along with 260 settlers who performed Talmudic rituals in the courtyards under the protection of occupation forces.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Arab League issued a statement labeling this act as a blatant violation of the historical and legal status quo, and a direct affront to the sanctity of Islamic holy sites. The League highlighted this as a serious escalation that endangers peace and security in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
The statement further denounced the Israeli occupation forces' raid on the UNRWA Jerusalem Health Center, followed by its closure orders. This was described as part of the illegal Israeli Knesset law that prohibits UNRWA's operations in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The League emphasized that these actions breach the UN General Assembly resolution concerning the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on Israel's obligations towards UN entities, including UNRWA. Such measures deprive thousands of Palestinian refugees of essential services in East Jerusalem.
The statement criticized these practices as violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, pointing to a systematic strategy aimed at altering Jerusalem's identity and undermining the Palestinian presence, whether through assaults on holy sites or the suppression of humanitarian service institutions.
The Arab League urged the international community, United Nations, and Human Rights Council to take immediate and decisive action to halt the incursions into Al Aqsa Mosque, protect the status quo, and ensure UNRWA's operational freedom in Jerusalem. They called for stopping all measures that hinder its humanitarian efforts and holding accountable those responsible for these violations. Additionally, they emphasized the need for international protection for the Palestinian people, their holy sites, and institutions, warning that international silence encourages the continuation of these acts and undermines justice and international law.
