Cairo: An international conference focused on combating Islamophobia took place at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo. The event underscored the urgent need to address the growing issue of Islamophobia, which has become a significant concern in recent years.
According to Qatar News Agency, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Department at the League of Arab States, Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, delivered a speech on behalf of the Secretary-General. He emphasized the increasing prevalence of Islamophobia, describing it as a dangerous phenomenon that requires immediate attention. Khattabi called for coordinated efforts to understand the dimensions of the issue, analyze its roots, and develop clear solutions to confront it effectively.
Khattabi pointed out that various political, social, and cultural factors contribute to the rise of Islamophobia. These include inadequate legislation, a lack of understanding of Islamic teachings and values, media incitement, fear of the unknown, and concerns about national identity. These elements have fueled anti-Muslim sentiment, leading to prejudiced judgments, false stereotypes, and the spread of hate speech.
The conference highlighted the importance of collaboration among governments, international organizations, and civil society groups to address Islamophobia with a shared sense of responsibility. Khattabi emphasized the role of traditional and digital media in promoting tolerance, pluralism, and acceptance while countering negative narratives.
Khattabi also criticized biased media for amplifying mistakes, spreading negative images, and fueling extremist rhetoric. Such actions, he argued, exacerbate the situation, potentially leading to racism and terrorism, which undermine freedom of belief and disrespect religious sanctity.
He acknowledged the United Nations' efforts to tackle Islamophobia by establishing the International Day to Combat Islamophobia and adopting measures like appointing a UN Special Envoy. The League of Arab States, operating under the UN's umbrella, has also taken steps to address Islamophobia through resolutions at Arab summits.
