Arab League Backs New Roadmap for Resolution in Al Suweida

Cairo: The Arab League welcomed the adoption of a roadmap to resolve the crisis in Syria’s Suweida province, emphasizing that it is based on the unity of Syrian territory and full equality of citizens in rights and duties.

According to Qatar News Agency, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit described the roadmap as an important step toward stabilizing the situation in southern Syria. He highlighted its provisions affirming that Sweida is an integral part of Syria with no future outside the country, and that the province’s residents are Syrian citizens with equal rights and obligations.

Aboul Gheit stressed that settling the crisis in Sweida and other parts of Syria requires preserving the pluralistic fabric of Syrian society to ensure equality before the law and a citizenship-based framework for all Syrians. He noted that the roadmap includes detailed points for achieving a sustainable settlement in Sweida, along with a clear mechanism for verification, follow-up, and monitoring developments.

He expressed hope that the commitments outlined in the plan would be implemented precisely in order to address the root causes of the crisis and prevent its recurrence.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the new roadmap, reaffirming that it is grounded in Syria’s territorial unity and the principle that all Syrians are equal citizens in rights and duties.

The announcement followed a tripartite meeting in Damascus that brought together Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shibani, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and US Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barak to discuss the situation in Sweida and explore practical solutions to ensure security and stability in southern Syria.
