5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia’s Papua Island

Papua island: An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck Papua Island in Indonesia Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency said in a statement that the earthquake was located 27 km east of the Sarmi Regency on the island, at a depth of 15 km.

There have been no reports of casualties or material damage.

Earthquakes frequently strike various parts of Indonesia due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where multiple tectonic plates meet, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
