Tokyo: An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck eastern Japan Wednesday, with no tsunami warning issued.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake struck southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 50 km, recording a magnitude of 5.0. Meanwhile, in central Tokyo, the tremor was recorded at a magnitude of 3.0.

Japan Atomic Power Company, the operator of the Tokai nuclear power plant in Ibaraki Prefecture, confirmed that there were no abnormalities.

Shinkansen bullet train service between Tokyo and Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan was suspended following the earthquake, but resumed approximately 10 minutes later after no problems were detected, according to JR-EAST, the railway company.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries so far.

Japan lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of high seismic and volcanic activity.
