5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Kazakhstan

Doha: The seismic stations network of the Kazakh Ministry of Emergency Situations recorded a 5.9-magnitude earthquake Monday, which was felt in southern Kazakhstan. Kazinform News Agency, citing the Ministry, reported that the earthquake occurred in the Jambyl Region and the city of Shymkent, and its epicenter was located 465 km southwest of Almaty, within Kyrgyzstan territory.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Ministry confirmed that no material damage or casualties have been recorded so far, noting that it is continuing to monitor the situation in coordination with relevant authorities in the region.

Central Asia is frequently hit by earthquakes, but they usually do not cause significant damage due to their location in mountainous areas far from the population.
