5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands

Doha: An earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Tuesday the South Sandwich Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

According to Qatar News Agency, the earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of 37.5 km, about 100 km southeast of the British island of South Georgia, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. There have been no reports of casualties or material damage so far. No tsunami warnings have been issued following the earthquake.

The South Sandwich Islands, located in the remote southern Atlantic Ocean, lie in a highly seismically active zone where the South American and Scotia tectonic plates converge. In August 2021, the region was struck by a powerful earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0. Since the islands are uninhabited, the impacts of such events are typically minimal.
