Doha: An earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale struck West New Britain province in northeastern Papua New Guinea.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake occurred 162 km from Kimbe town, at a depth of 10 km. Despite the significant magnitude, there have been no reports of casualties or material losses due to the earthquake so far.
Interestingly, the same area experienced a 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, highlighting the region's susceptibility to seismic activities. Papua New Guinea is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area extending along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, characterized by high activity of earthquakes and volcanoes. This region includes 90% of the active volcanoes in the world. In February 2018, it witnessed a devastating earthquake that killed at least 100 people and caused landslides that buried dozens of villages.
