5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands

South Sandwich Islands: An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck on Sunday the South Sandwich Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

According to Qatar News Agency, the earthquake’s epicenter was recorded at a depth of 316 km below the Earth’s surface, about 206 km northwest of Houma Tonga, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

There have been no reports of human casualties or material damage from the earthquake so far, and no tsunami warnings have been issued.

The South Sandwich Islands, located in the remote southern Atlantic Ocean, lie in a highly seismically active zone where the South American and Scotia tectonic plates converge. In August 2021, the region was struck by a powerful earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0. Since the islands are uninhabited, the impacts of such events are typically minimal.
