Bonin islands: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the Bonin Islands in Japan Sunday, with no tsunami warning issued.
According to Qatar News Agency, the earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of 10 km, as reported by the US Geological Survey. This seismic event underscores Japan's vulnerability to earthquakes, given its location at the intersection of four tectonic plates.
Japan's geographical positioning makes it susceptible to frequent seismic activities. The country is also home to 100 active volcanoes. The memory of the devastating 2011 earthquake, which measured 9.0 in magnitude and triggered a tsunami, remains fresh. That disaster resulted in the loss of more than 15,000 lives and caused a catastrophic failure at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
