5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern Papua New Guinea

Doha: An earthquake measuring 5 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck on Tuesday the Morobe Province in northern Papua New Guinea. The earthquake’s epicenter was located 83 km from Finschhafen, at a depth of 53.4 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

According to Qatar News Agency, there have been no reports of casualties or material damage due to the earthquake so far.

Papa New Guinea is located in the so-called Ring of Fire, a region that extends along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, which is characterized by high seismic and volcanic activity. This region includes 90 percent of the active volcanoes in the world.

In February 2018, the country witnessed an earthquake that killed at least 100 people and caused landslides that buried dozens of villages.
