5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Napo Province in Ecuador

Napo: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit on Tuesday Napo province in northeastern Ecuador. The US Geological Survey said in a statement that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 35 km from Archidona in the province, at a depth of 6.4 km.

According to Qatar News Agency, so far, there have been no reports of human or material losses as a result of the quake. The earthquake was felt in Tena and Quito as well as several nearby areas. Authorities continue to monitor the condition of buildings, particularly in mountainous regions, in anticipation of potential hidden damage, especially in older or non-reinforced facilities.

Ecuador is constantly exposed to earthquakes due to its location on the borders of the Nazca Plate. In April 2016, it witnessed a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that destroyed villages in the coastal provinces of Manabi and Esmeraldas, and killed 673 people.
