4 Survive as Search Continues After River Boat Sinks in Central Sudan

Wad al-zaki: Four people survived after a boat carrying 16 passengers sank in the Wad Al-Zaki area of White Nile State in central Sudan, while search operations continue to determine the fate of the remaining passengers.

According to Qatar News Agency, Sudanese activists circulated photos and videos on social media showing small boats combing the river, with volunteers taking part in rescue efforts. Dozens of residents gathered along the banks of the Nile to monitor the ongoing search.

In a statement, the Sudan Doctors Network said the incident occurred shortly after another river boat sank in the Nile earlier, resulting in the deaths of 21 people. The Network said the incidents highlight a worrying recurrence of river transport accidents due to the absence of strict safety requirements and regular vessel inspections, which increases the risks to civilian lives.

It urged the relevant authorities to assume their responsibilities by reviewing the condition of Nile boats and ferries, ensuring compliance with safety standards, enforcing clear load limits, and providing adequate rescue equipment to safeguard lives and prevent further tragedies.
