Tanegashima: An earthquake measuring 4.4 magnitude on the Richter scale struck off Tanegashima island in Japan on Wednesday.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Japan Meteorological Agency stated that the quake occurred off the southeastern coast of Tanegashima island, at a depth of 10 km.
There have been no reports of casualties or material damage.
Japan sits at the junction of four tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. In 2011, a powerful 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that killed over 15,000 people and caused a major nuclear disaster at the Fukushima plant.
